Amrit and Viresh, two good-guy commandos in India’s National Security Guard, board an overnight express train to rescue Amrit’s sweetheart Tulika from an arranged marriage. Beni and Fani, the father-and-son leaders of a group of dacoit bandits, board the same train on a mission to liberate the phones and wallets of the train’s rich passengers. When these worlds collide, the ensuing conflict escalates from scuffle to brawl to unrelenting maelstrom of violence.
Kill is an explosive action thriller from India that premiered in 2023 at (the other) TIFF, where it was a fan favorite of their Midnight Madness program. It has since been gaining a cult following among action junkies for its hard-hitting hand-to-hand combat, drawing comparisons to The Raid and Train to Busan.
The train setting heightens the action, keeping the fighting confined to close quarters and forcing the combatants to get creative. The film gains momentum along with the train until our hero’s righteous fury becomes a similarly unstoppable force. By the time a bandit gets his head bashed in with a fire extinguisher, you know you’re in for a no-holds-barred action extravaganza.
Kill is best enjoyed with an audience of fellow film fans to share in the cheers, jeers, and gasps. Blårock? Perfect!
