Yacht Rock is a series of short films created for L.A.’s monthly Channel 101 short film festival. It was these short films that retroactively gave the name “yacht rock” to the genre of smooth soft rock that is also known here in Scandinavia as “westcoast.” Each five-minute episode takes the form of a faux music documentary that picks one late-70s/early-80s hit song and tells the story of how it was produced. The stories are fictional, comedic, and over-the-top, but they’re all built around grains of truth.
The shorts struck a deep vein of nostalgia for these artists, who for many years were considered irrelevant dad rock, but who were ripe for a re-evaluation. Yacht Rock quickly became an underground hit that went viral on early YouTube, and soon yacht rock DJ nights and yacht rock cover bands started popping up all over the country. A revival was born, and it quickly took on a life of its own. Sadly, the original Yacht Rock shorts often get forgotten in the shuffle, but Tromsø Filmklubb remembers.
Join us at Blårock for Yachtnatt: a very yachty evening featuring a screening of the original Yacht Rock shorts, a special yacht rock quiz, and an extra smooth DJ night, all hosted by Tromsø Filmklubb’s resident smooth music superfans Mike Murphy and Anna Vida Breines Høiland.

Trivia
Michael McDonald said that some of the stories came uncannily close to reality. “It’s kind of like when you get a letter from a stalker who’s never met you. They somehow hit on something, and you have to admit they’re pretty intuitive.”
